Basic info of “Forget Me Not”

“Forget Me Not” is included in the third track on ENHYPEN’s 1st single in Japan “BORDER: Hakanai (Ephemeral)”.

And, it is also included in the ninth track of Japan’s 1st album “Sadame (Destiny)”.

Opening theme song of the TV anime “RE-MAIN”

It was the first original song in Japan and was the opening theme song of the TV anime “RE-MAIN “.

“RE-MAIN” is a late-night program on TV Asahi that aired from July to October 2021.

It is a sports youth TV anime based on water polo. (12 episodes)

Synopsis of “RE-MAIN” and the level of expectation from the voice actors

The main character of “RE-MAIN” is a high school boy named “Minato Kiyomizu.”

He originally went to an integrated junior high and high school, and he was the ace of the water polo team in junior high school. When he wakes up from a long coma after a car accident, he loses his memories of his middle school days.

He couldn’t go on to higher education in that integrated school, and re-entered another high school a year late … It’s a very eventful life.

The story seems to unfold from the point where he joins the weak water polo club of the high school he entered.

Speaking of which
Speaking of which

The situation of “re-entering a different high school a year late” overlaps with Jay’s life. (Jay seems to be re-entering for personal reasons, but…)

In addition to the beauty of the anime, I am also interested in the voice actors of the characters.

Subaru Kimura” who has been exposed to the media as a talent, “Natsuki Hanae” who is famous as the voice actor of “Tanjiro Kamado” in “Kimetsu no yaiba (Demon Slayer)”, and “Hikaru Midorikawa” who is famous as the voice actor of “Kaede Rukawa” in “SLAM DUNK”, have been appointed, and the enthusiasm of the production team can be felt.

In such a situation, ENHYPEN has been selected as the artist to sing the opening theme song, so don’t you think there are high expectations?

Since the anime characters and ENHYPEN members are of the same generation, it must be a theme song that fits the world of the anime without any discomfort.

Song structure and line distribution of “Forget Me Not”

I tried to summarize the song structure and line distribution of “Forget Me Not” with a diagram.

楽曲構成とパート分け: Forget Me Not
Song structure and line distribution: Forget Me Not

The intro starts off with an electric guitar sound, and it’s a refreshing song reminiscent of a cheerful and playful youth.

Based on the general structure, a refrain (duo) is placed in the intro and outro, and the bridge before the final chorus gives a change.

Heeseung and Jake have about the same number of line distribution.

This is followed by Sunoo and Jungwon, with the other members having an equal ratio.

Interpretation of the title and lyrics of “Forget Me Not”

Due to copyright reasons, it is difficult to write down and explain all the lyrics of “Forget Me Not”, so I will focus on the points and write my own interpretation.

The title means “Don’t forget me”

First of all, the title “Forget Me Not” means “don’t forget me” in English.

It is also the English name of a plant called “Wasurena-gusa” in Japanese.

The etymology comes from a sad love story in medieval Germany. A knight (wearing armor) slips his foot while trying to pick a forget-me-not flower that is blooming on the bank of the river for his lover, and he will die. It is said to be the knight’s last words.

Since the main character of the anime has lost his memory of his junior high school days, it may be better to understand that the object of the thought “Don’t forget me” is directed at himself.

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

昨日と違う自分へ
今日の空へ叫べ
明日の希望抱いて
この胸に forget me not

(Lyricist: Ryo Ito, The Answer, Tetsunori Kotani (pka Barbora) | Quoted from “Forget Me Not” by ENHYPEN [BORDER: Hakanai], 2021)

I quoted the lyrics used in both the intro and outro. On stage, Jake and Sunoo are in charge.

It’s hard to notice if you just listen to it as a sound, but when you put them together as letters, the words “yesterday,” “today,” and “tomorrow” were arranged in chronological order.

From these lyrics, it seems that each day of youth, which is in the process of growing up, is very important and meaningful. “Let’s cherish the days of chasing our dreams,” I feel that this is the kind of thought that is put into it.

“The smell of rain” is petrichor

雨の匂いが近づく なぜか切なくて
過ぎゆく夏の午後 取り残されたままの僕

(Lyricist: Ryo Ito, The Answer, Tetsunori Kotani (pka Barbora) | Quoted from “Forget Me Not” by ENHYPEN [BORDER: Hakanai], 2021)

Next, I quoted the lyrics of the 2nd verse. Jake and Sunghoon are in charge.

There is a phrase “Ame no nioi (smell of rain)” and it is described as “Chikazuku (approaching)”, so I imagine that the smell of rain falling in other places is transmitted to the place.

As for why “Boku (I)” feel “Setsunakute (sad)”, if you imagine the evening shower, this lyric may depict the end of summer.

By the way, the smell of rain has a name, and the smell at the beginning of the rain is called “Petrichor” (stone essence), and the smell after the rain is called “Geosmin” (the smell of the earth).

This lyric is supposed to mean petrichor.

In addition, from the contrast of “Torinokosareta mamano boku (me left behind)” to the “Sugiyuku natsuno gogo (passing summer afternoon)”, we can feel the impatience of “Boku (me)” who is (seemingly) unable to move and remains in the flow of time.

There is an image that is connected to the title of the anime.

Summer afternoons are usually hot, and people tend to be in a state where their brains don’t work, right? At such times, you may find yourself thinking more deeply. Especially when you are a student, you may feel it more strongly.

Thoughts on Artist Activities

想いのたけ 越えてゆけ
一瞬に詰め込んだって
届かない群青の空 僕ら求めてる
想いのたけ 泣いた分だけ
この声が尽きるまで
「前に進む」と叫ぶよ
見果てぬ夢の続き forget me not

(Lyricist: Ryo Ito, The Answer, Tetsunori Kotani (pka Barbora) | Quoted from “Forget Me Not” by ENHYPEN [BORDER: Hakanai], 2021)

I quoted the lyrics that are common to all choruses.

Every time I hear the phrases “Todokanai gunjouno sora (ultramarine sky that can’t be reached)” or “Mae ni susumu (move forward)” in this chorus, I am reminded of the lyrics “Sorae ayumi dasuyo (I’m going to step into the sky)” from the song “Given–Taken [Japanese Ver.]”.

When I imagine an anime based on water polo, I think that the view from the surface of the water when soaking in the outdoor pool is the sky, but I think it is also a content that shows ENHYPEN’s own artistic activities.

Considering the lyrics of the song “Drunk–Dazed” that “Sakasani tatte iru (standing upside down)”, it can be said that “Sora (sky)” represents the world of the “artist” that the trainees are aiming for.

The “Take” in “Omoi no take” can be written as “Jo” in kanji, and its meaning is “everything you were feeling“.

I feel that it contains the idea that they will overcome all the emotions of joy, anger and sorrow that they experienced when they were trainees, and walk the path of the artist that was their dream.

When I think back ...
When I think back …

As the members sing, they may be thinking about the events of I-LAND, which was spectacular.

There was no MV for “Forget Me Not” … But

I looked it up, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find the MV for “Forget Me Not”.

The title song of “BORDER: Hakanai (Ephemeral)” is “Given-Taken [Japanese Ver.]” and “Forget Me Not” does not seem to have a promotional video as a song.

Instead, the opening video of the TV anime “RE-MAIN” has been released, so I will post a link to it next.

Listening to it this way, ENHYPEN is also a great anime song singer!

Jay “Remember how I was right?”
NI-KI “Huh?”
Jay “After seeing everything,”
NI-KI “Yes.”
Jay “I told you guys, I’m 100% sure that this is going to start this way. And I was right.”
NI-KI “Which part?”
Jay “The starting part. I said that they’re going to be on top or inside water, and the sun is going to shine, and I was right.”
NI-KI “Really?”
Jay “I was right.”
NI-KI “I haven’t seen it yet.”
Jay “They did exactly like that, for the beginning.”
NI-KI “Can I watch it?”
Jay “We all cracked up after watching that.”

Weverse

There was no dance in “Forget Me Not” … But

I looked it up, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find any dance video in “Forget Me Not”.

It seems that it was included in the setlist of the world tour “ENHYPEN WORLD TOUR ‘MANIFESTO’ in JAPAN” (from November 1, 2022 to January 22, 2023), but it seems that the dance choreography was not prepared, and the performance was like moving on stage.

A short video titled “EN_Clip” was released on the official YouTube channel, so I will post a link below.

It seems to be a stage video at Yokohama Arena (Kanagawa Prefecture). You can see that they are performing songs on a rotating stage. (from 0’32”)

“Forget Me Not” unfortunately had very little official movie …

Online Showcase (July 13, 2021)

This video was shown as an online showcase of the Japan debut.

Images of the blue sky and the sea were projected on a huge screen behind them, followed by the scenery (CG) seen from the window of the train along the sea.

As I wrote in the previous chapter, there was no dance choreography in this song, and they sang while sitting on chairs or standing by the microphone stand.

The scene where the members all step on the base of the microphone stand to return it to its original position is very cool, so please check it out. (from 1’51”)

There’s a story behind the filming of this showcase, Heeseung told us on VLIVE.

The practice using the microphone stand lasted for three hours, and at first the base was round and could not stand well, so the staff hurriedly made a square base. (Added on September 1, 2023)

Heeseung “To be honest, we have a behind the scenes story for “Forget Me Not.” That …”
Sunghoon “The foot thing?”
Heeseung “Yes.”
Heeseung “We had to step on the stand and bring it up ourselves.”
Sunghoon “Yeah.”
Heeseung “I think we did that for over 3 hours.”
Sunghoon “At first, the bottom was round.”
Heeseung “Yeah.”
Sunghoon “So we couldn’t get it to stand.”
Heeseung “That’s right.”
Sunghoon “So we made a rectangular one later on.”
Heeseung “Yeah.”
Sunghoon “Yes.”

Weverse

The outfit is also a blue shirt and jeans style, giving a refreshing impression.

Many of ENHYPEN’s songs have dark and cool concepts, but you can see the smiling faces of Jungwon, Jake and Ni-ki, making it a rare video that you don’t usually see on stage.

In the second verse (where Ni-ki is in charge), all the members sit in their chairs, and in the following pre-chorus (where Jay is in charge), Jay gets up from his chair and walks to the center. Please pay attention to Ni-ki’s behavior at that time. (from 1’43”)

After a brief look at Jay’s expression, Ni-ki’s right hand appears to be moving.

Ni-ki often slaps the buttocks of the members during performances, and he may have been slapping Jay’s buttocks at this time as well.

Thank you for reading to the end.

If you’re an ENGENE reserve, I hope you have some understanding of ENHYPEN’s song “Forget Me Not.”

Also, if you are a senior ENGENE, it would be helpful if you could point out any mistakes in the “Forget Me Not” related information that I have organized.

Special Thanks 🙌
